Construction Commences on Finnlines’ First Hansa Superstar Class Vessel

Finnlines has reached a significant milestone in its fleet development programme with the official commencement of construction for its first Hansa Superstar class RoPax vessel. The traditional steel-cutting ceremony took place on 15 May 2026 at the CMI Weihai Shipyard in China.

Environmental Technology and Sustainability

The Hansa Superstar class is specifically designed to reduce carbon dioxide emissions through a combination of alternative fuels and energy-efficient technologies. Operating under the Finnish flag, the methanol-powered dual-fuel vessels will incorporate several sustainable solutions:

  • Alternative Propulsion: Methanol-fuelled dual-fuel engines.

  • Hydrodynamic Efficiency: Optimised hullform and propulsion supplemented by an air lubrication system.

  • Energy Management: Waste heat recovery, heat pumps, a 2 MWh battery system, and 5 MW shore power capabilities.

Capacity and Onboard Experience

The new vessels are engineered to meet the growing demands of commercial trade while enhancing the standard of passenger service on long-distance sea crossings.

  • Freight Operations: The vessels provide 5,100 lane metres of cargo capacity to support European supply chains.

  • Passenger Capacity & Accommodations: Accommodating up to 1,000 passengers, the layout features 321 redesigned cabins. The categories have been structured to meet varied requirements and budgets, including suites, family cabins, standard options, and designated pet-friendly units.

  • Onboard Services: Facilities include a variety of dining options—ranging from buffet and à la carte restaurants to a seasonal pop-up terrace—alongside a spa and sauna area, retail space, and dedicated children's play areas. A forward-facing bar on deck 12 will provide panoramic views of the Baltic Sea.

We are proud to participate in this project and we look forward to working with the team from Finnlines
